“The exhibition Good & Plenty Juicy is about candy. It plays on candy’s visual elements of shape and color as well as the variously sunny and dark psychological associations it can have.

Candy is perceived as either a treat or a threat.

The dual connotations of the enticing and the forbidden are imprinted from childhood with memories of candy being used either as reward or withheld as punishment.

As adults that duality is re-experienced through conflicts of viewing luscious sugar confections that collide with health professional’s warnings that candy is unsafe and even deadly.

Beautiful but dangerous.

Emotional confusion is heightened. Things are not what they seem. Candy provides dazzling visual pleasure: shapes, colors, surfaces, and abundance along with guilt, concern, anxiety and remorse.

Can we indulge in simple aesthetic physically palpable sensations?

In “Good and Plenty Juicy” I conjure the conflicting emotions hovering around candy while also celebrating the visual beauty and tactile experience of it: shinny, sticky, mushy, crispy…juicy, the visceral connections and connotations of candy and it’s potent aesthetic and sensuous characteristics.”
